US President Considered Addressing Nation After Kurt Cobain’s Death

source: The Music

American President Bill Clinton allegedly took Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder to one side to ask him whether he should address the nation following the death of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain.

In an extract from Keith Cameron’s book Mudhoney: The Sound And The Fury From Seattle, which has been published on Spin, Mudhoney say that during a tour where they were supporting Pearl Jam the two bands were invited to the White House one day – the day after Kurt Cobain’s death.

After Mudhoney bassist Matt Lukin smoked a joint on the way to the White House (and freaked out a bit when he got there) Cameron retells the following:

Soon after arriving at the White House, the two bands got separated by officials. Pearl Jam were ushered into the Oval Office to meet Bill Clinton, which hadn’t been part of the original plan—apparently, the president wanted to seek advice on whether he should address the nation in the wake of Cobain’s suicide.

While the matter of apparent national importance was being discussed, Cameron says:

Mudhoney, meanwhile, were assigned a Secret Service agent who gave them a behind-the-scenes tour of the White House. As they were ushered past the velvet ropes, tourists waiting in line for a regular tour ran up and asked for autographs.

“Obviously word had got around that Pearl Jam was in the House, but these old ladies didn’t know what Pearl Jam looked like,” says [drummer Dan] Peters. “We’re saying, ‘Yeah, we’re not Pearl Jam.’ And they were like, ‘Ha ha! Just give us your autograph.’ Still, it was a nice diversion from the whole Kurt-blowing-his-head-off thing.”

The two bands’ paths eventually crossed in the White House Press Room, where [vocalist Mark] Arm and Vedder had their picture taken shaking hands over the presidential seal on the podium.

“It was a great private tour,” says [guitarist Steve] Turner. “The Secret Service guy was telling us about the different people that have been killed on the White House lawn. There was one guy dressed in full ninja gear who thought he was invisible, coming across the lawn. They finally just shot him. I don’t recall hearing about that on the news! It was a surreal day. I remember being almost troubled that the President of the United States of America is taking the time to meet Eddie Vedder. Like, that’s top of today’s agenda? Really?!”

The book, released later this month in America, was released last year in Australia through Omnibus Press.

Three Pearl Jam Drummers Unite In Surreal Photos

Matt Cameron was photographed backstage at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with former Pearl Jam drummers Dave Krusen and Jack Irons. Krusen was part of the band’s inducted Hall of Fame lineup, and while Irons wasn’t he was invited by his close friend Eddie Vedder to attend. Krusen drummed on Ten, while Irons drummed on No Code and Yield. Below this photo is another awesome Krusen backstage photo!

Jack Irons tweeted, “Very happy to have been in attendance for Rock Hall 2017!! Nothing but love for my friends in Pearl Jam and the whole PJ organization!”

Dave Krusen also shared a backstage photo of himself and his family with the ‘boss’ Eddie Vedder. Krusen wrote, “Family photo with the boss- thanks for a great night everybody!”

Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron commented on the controversy surrounding former Pearl Jam drummer Dave Abbruzzese’s exclusion from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in a late March interview with Rockol. Keep in mind the interview was published in Italian, so these are translated quotes and Cameron may have used different verbiage in his answers.

The reporter asked, “Does Pearl Jam’s entry into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame have a special meaning for you? And how many drummers will be present?”

Cameron responded, “Things are out of my control, I have no idea what will happen with the drummers. I just know that the ones who enter the Hall of Fame will be me and Dave Krusen. It is an honor. It will be fun.”

When asked about a new Pearl Jam album, Cameron said, “For now the only plan is to gather and write new songs.”

Chris Cornell’s Funeral (Part 2)

Chris Cornell’s Final Resting Place And Funeral Details

Chris Cornell, the lead singer for Soundgarden, will be laid to rest on May 26 in Los Angeles, two people with knowledge of the plans told CNN Saturday.

Cornell’s body will be flown from Michigan to Los Angeles on Sunday, and Cornell will be buried at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, the sources said.

One of the sources told CNN, “The family is thinking about a (public) memorial for fans, but is coping now with their loss and the funeral service.”

Late Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland’s funeral was held at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in December 2015, with members of Stone Temple Pilots, Velvet Revolver, and Jane’s Addiction in attendance.

Chris Cornell’s Mother-In-Law Criticizes Eddie Vedder, Claims He Won’t Attend Memorial

Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder has left for his European solo tour, and Chris Cornell’s mother in law is claiming he will not be attending Cornell’s Celebration of Life on Friday at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Vedder kicks off his tour on Saturday in Amsterdam, and the tour runs through the end of June.

Cornell’s mother in law Toni Karayiannis criticized Vedder on Twitter for not attending the ceremony, and for a variety of other reasons. At first she did not say who she was talking about by name, but she later retweeted messages critical of Vedder, and tweeted about him singing “Daughter.” Pearl Jam released a tribute photo entitled ‘Chris’ on their website a few days ago.

We usually post written text from tweets in addition to embedding them, but due to the highly emotional nature of these remarks, we are only embedding them in case Karayiannis decides to remove any of them at a later date.

Everyone grieves in their own way, especially with a terrible tragedy like this. We have yet to hear from Vedder about how he is dealing with the loss of his friend of 27 years, so it is impossible for us to judge him or anyone involved in this situation. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Cornell family, Eddie Vedder, and all of Cornell’s other friends and fans.

[I personally agree with the editors of Alternative Nation. It’s just impossible to believe that Eddie was not deeply touched by his long time friend’s death but with the tour dates already scheduled, he had to make a difficult choice and I absolutely understand that he did not want to leave his European fans. In fact, he paid a tribute to Chris during his live shows and I think it was the best he could do to celebrate Chris’ life. I believe Chris would understand and approve it. – footnote by Anna Solun]

Surviving Soundgarden members reunite for dinner following Chris Cornell’s funeral

Family, friends, collaborators, and contemporaries came out in force to honor Chris Cornell during a funeral service held at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery last Friday. Soundgarden’s three surviving members, Kim Thayil, Ben Shepherd, and Matt Cameron were in attendance, as was founding bassist Hiro Yamamoto. Following the ceremony, Thayil, Cameron, and Yamamoto went out to dinner together, joined by longtime Soundgarden producers Jack Endino and Stuart Hallerman, and Cornell’s ex-wife, Susan Silver. Hallerman shared a photo of the group with the caption, “We’re all living on ‘silver linings’ today, but they are abundant” (via Alternative Nation).

Stuart Hallerman shared the following photo after Chris Cornell’s funeral with the caption: “We’re all living on “silver linings” today, but they are abundant.”

In the photo are Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil, former Soundgarden producer Jack Endino, Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron, former Soundgarden bassist Hiro Yamamoto, and Chris Cornell’s ex-wife Susan Silver.

Hallerman responded to a comment from former Screaming Trees drummer Mark Pickerel, “Your name came up, Matt was reminiscing about their first trip to Ellensburg, a show with you and the Trees. Car problems! VW bus with no clutch cable made it home over the pass after…”

Ex-Pearl Jam drummer Dave Abbruzzese commented, “Absolutely fantastic!! Thank you for posting this photo! Great great great to see you all together!”

Ben Shepherd was not featured in the photo, and the only photograph that appeared to surface of him at the funeral was a picture of him next to Filter frontman Richard Patrick.
